History

The history of bee keeping as we know it began in 1851 when the
Reverend L.L. Langstoth made the simple discovery of bee space, resulting in a revolution in hive design.
He discovered bees will not construct honey comb in spaces less than
3/8 inch(9.5mm)

In the Langstronth hive, bee space separates each of the frames in the hive, the hive walls, and the top of the inner cover.
With out this space the bees would fill the hive with (bees wax) burr comb. The frames could not be removed.

Before this time the hive was destroyed harvesting the honey.
